THE NEXT BOOK

Winner of this year’s Pulitzer Prize for fiction and the Women’s Prize for Literature 2023

Our tenth novel up for discussion is Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver, author of best-selling The Poisonwood Bible among many other big hitting bestsellers.

The story set in the Southern Appalachian Mountains of Virginia (where the author is from) follows the story-arc of Dickens’ David Copperfield and although it lacks the rags to riches glory of that tale, there are definite character parallels and it’s great fun arranging the characters in their opposing tales - like a game of literature drafts.

Not a schmaltzy Christmas read (as this seasonal special edition cover might suggest) but a hard-hitting reveal of the massive opiod-addiction culture endemic within American society below the poverty line (and above).
Every time Demon is knocked back he gets right back up again, until he’s almost beyond salvation…
