We’re delighted to announce the return of Richard King (who held our first event at the bookshop in November 2022).
Richard will be in conversation with music journalist Jude Rogers about his latest book Travels Over Feeling; Arthur Russell, A Life
An artist resistant to the idea of genre, his talent allowed him to excel in any number of styles and dialogues. The gift Arthur bequeathed in his archive was to demonstrate that such a working practice was not only possible but vital to his musical consciousness.
Across a twenty-year career Arthur Russell created a pioneering body of work which defied classification and continues to influence the music of today.
Travels Over Feeling brings together the largely unseen hand-written scores, lyrics, photos, letters and drawings found in both Arthur’s and other private archives, alongside wide-ranging original interviews with Arthur’s collaborators, contemporaries, family and friends. The resulting book reveals a true picture of one of the most distinctive artists of the last fifty years..
Drawing upon the voices of its inhabitants – including Neil Kinnock, Rowan Williams, Leanne Wood, Gruff Rhys, Michael Sheen, Nicky Wire, Sian James, language activists, members of former mining communities and many more – the book is a vivid portrait of a nation determined to survive, while maintaining the hope that Wales will one day thrive on its own terms.
