Kathy Biggs, author of the soon to be published Scrap and hugely popular debut novel, The Luck

Kathy Biggs, whose newest book Scrap is available pre-publication preview at this event, was a big hit when she spoke at North Books in January about her debut novel, The Luck.

1930: Beattie and Darragh give all they have to make a living from their Midwest farm, The Luck, pouring their love into their home and their one son. When Conrad leaves to find a new life they are heartbroken, but later thrilled when his two young daughters come to live with them. The girls are a new start for Beattie and she is determined to keep them.

The Luck, published by Welsh women’s press Honno, is an epic generational saga set in America’s rural west and now Kathy has come up with something completely new and fresh, again.

Life has become stale for best friends Mackie and Sharon, who never imagined they’d end up working in a scrapyard. Sharon has dreams of becoming a cruise ship star, while a browbeaten Mackie cares for his wayward daughter’s twins.
But fate takes an unexpected turn when a mysterious kid is discovered in the boot of a car. He has a remarkable gift—he can draw visions of the future, and this opens up new avenues that neither could have foreseen…
Scrap is a modern fable about the human capacity to overcome the hand life deals us and start afresh.

THE AUTHORS

Kathy Biggs is originally from Yorkshire, where she trained to be a nurse. She took a summer job in Mid Wales with her husband in 1985 – and never left. They bought a derelict cottage and lived 'off grid' for 14 years. During this time she started a family, trained to be a homeopath and took up Samba drumming. She has lived in her current location for the last 23 years: working and raising her family. She is a keen gardener and leads a local samba band. After being made redundant in 2017 she completed several Creative Writing courses provided by Aberystwyth University and discovered a passion for writing. The Luck was her first novel and has been followed up swiftly by Scrap.
